Small Church with Red Doors

"Small Church with Red Doors", Oil on Canvas Panel, 9"x11", Plein Air

This is a small church in San Marcos, California. The interesting story behind it is that it is actually two smaller churches joined together, both of which were moved to this site. The entry with the spire is one building and the other was cut in half and attached to the sides.

Left Behind

"Left Behind", Oil on Canvas Panel, 5"x7"

Our garden attracts a lot of butterflies each year. This Monarch didn't make the return trip south.

Smith Rock Sunset

"Smith Rock Sunset", Oil on Canvas Panel, 9"x12", Plein Air

I camped at Smith Rock State Park and captured several images of the area en plein air. Hiked some trails, over the top and along the river. The first evening there, I painted this 9x12 just before sunset. The low spot is Asterisk Pass although Asterisk Rock is not visible from this angle.

Divided We Stand

"Divided We Stand", Oil on Canvas, 14"x11" Plein Air

This is a huge rock outcrop on the coast of Oregon that I have watched for 20 years. It had separated near the middle and part of it's top fell in wedging the two halves apart. Last year, the dividing rock disintegrated and fell into the abyss. Also, in the foreground, a sand dune has slowly developed in the leeward side of the rocks. European sea grass got a foothold in the sand stabilizing it and allowing more and more sand to settle in. Twenty years ago this area was all at beach level and now it ranges from ten to twenty-five feet high.

Windswept

"Windswept", Oil on Canvas Panel, 11"x14

I took a hike with a friend out on Port Orford Heads State Park in Oregon. Found this great view of Klooqueh Rock, and others, along the Tower Trail. Overcast day with moderate winds.

Shadows on the Wall

"Shadows on the Wall", Oil on Canvas Panel, 8"x10", Plein Air

Not far from the jardin in San Miguel de Allende I ran across this beautiful old Weathered door. I set up to paint it but then noticed how the shadows were playing on the wall of the street ahead.

Red Chair with Flowers

"Red Chair with Flowers", Oil on Canvas Panel, 10"x8", Plein Air

One year when I was in San Miguel de Allende I noticed this restaurant near our room. This chair was put out on the sidewalk to get the attention of people walking on the cross street.

Touchy Subject

"Touchy Subject", Oil on Canvas Panel, 14"x11", Plein Air

This is the top of a Saguaro cactus our builder planted next to our house about ten years ago. Now it is 3 or 4 feet above the second storey eave. He says "it's going to the moon!"

Free Range Chicken

"Free Range Chicken", Oil on Canvas, 12"x9"

In Mexico, most chickens run free. For several years, our neighbor's chickens would roost in one of the trees in our yard. Later, when the herds of goats kept ravaging our plants, we decided to fence them out.

Hangover

"Hangover", Oil on Canvas Panel, 8"x8"

Walking around San Migeull de Allende, I discovered this wonderful alley following a curved wall with a beautiful Bougainvillea cascading over the top. Through the archway was a shady courtyard.
